Hotels in Midtown Manhattan

Hotels in Midtown Manhattan

Hotels in Midtown Manhattan are a logical choice when you’re visiting New York. Here, you’ll be right in the heart of many of the city’s famous attractions: Times Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park and many more. What’s more, all the subway lines are nearby, making it easy to explore the rest of the city. Below are my recommendations for this neighbourhood, ranging from the best affordable hotels in Midtown to boutique and luxury hotels.

Hotels around Times Square

If you’re visiting New York for the first time, I always recommend booking a hotel in Times Square. You’ll be right in the heart of the city, with all the subway lines within easy reach and the city bustling around you 24/7. See my favourite hotels in Times Square. If you’d prefer to stay just outside the area, then these hotels are for you!

Best Hotels in Midtown New York

Midtown is the heart of Manhattan and close to many main attractions. There’s always a subway station just around the corner, so you can reach the rest of the city quickly. That’s why I almost always recommend that visitors stay in this area: it’s the ideal base from which to explore New York. In my opinion, these are the best hotels in Midtown Manhattan:

  1. Virgin Hotels New York City

I always find Virgin Hotels New York City a lovely place to stay. It’s located on Broadway, within walking distance of the Empire State Building and Madison Square Park, and with several subway stations just around the corner, you can get around the city quickly.

As well as its neat rooms, the hotel offers a range of other facilities to ensure you have a pleasant stay. For example, there’s a swimming pool on the roof terrace, so you can take a dip with the Empire State Building in the background. And you can enjoy a drink at the rooftop bar year-round.

  2. MADE Hotel

The MADE Hotel is a place I love to stay at, mainly because of the atmosphere. The rooms are tastefully decorated and a little different from what you usually see in most hotels, with plenty of wood and a touch more colour. What’s more, for a four-star boutique hotel in Midtown, it’s often very competitively priced.

The hotel has a coffee bar where you can enjoy breakfast in the morning. There’s also a rooftop bar where you can enjoy a drink while taking in the city views.

  3. New Yorker

The New Yorker Hotel is one of the city’s most iconic hotels. It is a 1930s Art Deco building and has that classic New York feel. The rooms at the New Yorker are a bit dated in places, but for the location and price, it’s good value for money.

This Midtown hotel is situated on 34th Street, diagonally opposite Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. Thanks to this central location, you can easily walk to the sights or take the subway.

  4. Hilton Times Square

The Hilton New York Times Square is situated on 42nd Street, right in the heart of the city. Times Square is just a few minutes’ walk away, and just around the corner you’ll find several subway lines that will take you to the rest of New York.

The rooms are exactly what you’d expect from a Hilton: spacious, tidy and without any surprises. If you’re travelling with your family, it’s great that a room can accommodate four people. The hotel also has a small supermarket selling water, snacks and breakfast, and after a day of sightseeing, you can round off the day at the rooftop bar.

  5. AC Hotel by Marriott

The AC Hotel by Marriott is ideal for a trip to New York. Thanks to its central location near Times Square, you’re just a stone’s throw away from all the city’s attractions, making it the perfect base.

The hotel is neat and tidy and has all the basic facilities. What makes it just that little bit better than other hotels in Midtown New York, in my view, is the rooftop bar. From the bar, you can look out over the skyline and you can even see the Empire State Building.

  6. Park Terrace Hotel

In my opinion, the Park Terrace Hotel has one of the best locations in Midtown. If you book a room at the front of the hotel, you’ll have a view of Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. Times Square and Grand Central Terminal are just a few minutes’ walk away.

If you’re visiting New York during the Christmas period, this is the perfect place to stay. The hotel is festively decorated at this time of year, and Bryant Park’s Christmas market and ice rink are literally on your doorstep. It’s a lovely place to stay throughout the rest of the year too.

  7. Lotte New York Palace

You may recognise the Lotte New York Palace from Gossip Girl. The hotel is built around a historic building dating from 1882 and features spacious rooms with classic décor. Some rooms offer views of St Patrick’s Cathedral, which stands directly opposite the hotel in Midtown.

During your stay, a visit to The Gold Room is a must. As the name suggests, this is an Italian-style room decorated in gold. Take a seat at the bar for a drink and admire the room.

  8. HGU New York

HGU New York is housed in a stunning building dating from 1905, which has been fully restored and equipped with all modern conveniences. It is a small boutique hotel with a luxurious feel, but what makes it special to me is the homely atmosphere. I feel more as though I’m staying with friends here than staying in a hotel.

The location is also excellent. The hotel is situated on East 32nd Street in NoMad, a neighbourhood that’s just a little quieter than the rest of Midtown. The subway station for the line 6 is just around the corner, and Herald Square, which serves several subway lines, is just a few minutes’ walk away.

  9. Cambria Hotel New York – Chelsea

One of the more affordable options on this list is the Cambria Hotel New York. It is situated in Chelsea on West 28th Street, better known as the Flower District. Here you’ll find countless plant and flower shops that display some of their goods on the street, meaning that in the morning you’ll literally be walking amongst the flowers.

What’s more, the hotel has everything you need. The rooms are spacious enough; there’s a bar where you can also have a meal, and from the outdoor terrace you can look out towards the One World Trade Center. The High Line and Chelsea Market are also within walking distance.

  10. DoubleTree by Hilton New York Midtown Fifth Ave

Just around the corner from Rockefeller Center, you’ll find the DoubleTree by Hilton New York Midtown Fifth Ave. When you step out of the hotel, you’ll be looking straight at the iconic lights of Radio City Music Hall. Walk in the other direction and you’ll reach the spot where the ice rink is set up during the winter months. Also, within ten minutes you’ll be at Central Park or Times Square.

The hotel itself is pleasant and practical: the rooms are tidy and there are rooms for four people, which is handy when travelling with family. However, bear in mind that the street can get very busy during the Christmas period, precisely because you’re so close to Rockefeller Center.

Personally, I usually recommend Times Square or Midtown Manhattan. You’ll be right in the centre, with plenty of attractions within walking distance and several subway lines just round the corner.
