Anyone aged sixteen or older can rent an electric scooter in New York without having a (moped) driver’s license. Ride the e-scooter across Times Square, through the streets of Manhattan or along the Hudson River. Because the departure point is close to Central Park, you can also ride the scooter there. Controlling the electric scooter is very easy: you push off and press the throttle. You can then put both feet on the scooter and continue to accelerate. You can break with the handbrake or by letting go of the gas. You can always ask for an additional explanation when picking up if it’s your first time using a scooter.
Electric scooter in New York rules
There are some rules attached to the use of an electric scooter in New York. Because the scooters can reach a speed of 15 mph (25 km/h), they may not be used on the sidewalk but can be used on the bicycle paths. You are only allowed to drive on streets where the speed limit is 30 mph, which is true for most of Manhattan. There is also a minimum age of sixteen, and persons up to eighteen must wear a helmet. If you are older than eighteen, it is recommended that you wear a helmet.
