I get many questions on how easy it is to eat gluten free in New York. New York is a big city filled with diverse dietary requirements, so servers will not be surprised if you’ll request gluten free dishes in restaurants. Quite often there will already be a variety of gluten free dishes on the menu, or the standard dishes can be adapted to suit your needs. But of course there also are restaurants and bakeries that are known to be partially or entirely gluten free. I have made a selection of them for you.

Eating Gluten-free in New York

If you have coeliac disease, you may be concerned about whether you can safely eat gluten-free in New York. But I can assure you that this is definitely possible, so there is no need to worry. Many restaurants offer suitable dishes, and of course, there are also dedicated gluten-free spots.

You’ll be surprised at how many gluten free restaurants there are in New York. And almost every other restaurant has gluten-free options, so there’s plenty to choose from! I’ve listed some gluten-free restaurants, per neighbourhood below.

Uptown Manhattan

There are several gluten-free restaurants in Uptown:

🥐 Gluten free bakeries

It would be a shame if you couldn’t taste a New York bagel, cupcake or donut due to the gluten intolerance. Luckily there are a lot of bakeries that also sell their delicacies gluten free. Here are a few of them:

  • By the Way Bakery (2440 Broadway and 1236 Lexington Avenue)
  • Noglu (1266 Madison Avenue)
  • Modern Bread & Bagel (472 Columbus Avenue, 1427 3rd Avenue & 139 West 14th Street)

🛒 Gluten free Supermarkets

There are a few healthy supermarkets that offer a great variety of gluten-free products. You should at least check out Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Both chains have multiple locations across Manhattan. These supermarkets are not cheap but you will be able to find anything you need there.

Another great option for gluten-free groceries is Agata and Valentina on East 79th Street and 1st Avenue. They have two locations, located across the street from each other, one of which is gluten-free only.
