As many people visit Honolulu for a beach holiday, you can’t leave without having watched the sunset at Waikiki Beach. Many hotels are located along the beach, so if this is your main purpose, you’re at the right spot. The best spot to surf is on the North Shore of the island. Many famous surfing competitions take place here throughout the year.

Shopping

Honolulu is the shopping paradise of Hawaii. On Kalakaua Avenue, along Waikiki beach, there are several shopping malls and brand-name shops. Ala Moana Centre is the largest shopping mall. Here, you will find Macy’s and other American stores, as well as many restaurants. The Waikiki Trolley is a fun sightseeing bus that also drives to the mall.

Nature

Take at least half a day to a day to discover Hawaii’s natural beauty. Diamond Head volcano crater can be visited on the southeast side of Oahu. A hike to the top can take 30 minutes up to an hour, but the view is worth it! You will see panoramic views of the island. The tour is self-guided and includes entrance fees. If you don’t want to visit the volcano, you can also admire it from Waikiki beach in the distance.

Food and drinks in Honolulu

When you visit Hawaii, you’ll want to try the local food! Breakfast is probably one of the best local meals to enjoy during your stay. The restaurants and cafes in Honolulu open early. There are many good options for fresh fruit bowls and smoothies, as well as pancake shops.

Eggs Benedict is a dish that originated in New York and has become a Hawaiian favourite. The breakfast muffin with a melty egg on top is worth a try. Surf Lanai, in the Royal Hawaiian hotel, has great eggs and a nice atmosphere. In the Ala Moana Shopping Center, there are many options. Try a poke bowl or another Hawaiian favourite: ‘shave ice’.

Hotels in Waikiki

During your layover in Hawaii, Honolulu is a good base to begin your explorations of the island. Waikiki is the most popular area to book an accommodation, since you have many hotels to choose from. Whether you are travelling with kids or on your honeymoon. If you want an ocean view or to be close to the shops, in Waikiki you will find a hotel that fits your needs.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village is a major hotel in Waikiki. There are various accommodations and pools suitable for children. A variety of restaurants and shops can be found within the hotel grounds. The Hilton is suitable for both couples seeking a luxury service and for families, because of the child-friendly facilities.

Known as the ‘Pink Palace’, the Royal Hawaiian Luxury Collection Resort is a classic Waikiki oceanfront hotel. Located on a great spot between Kalakaua Avenue and Waikiki beach, you are close to the bustle, yet it offers a relaxing experience. Families with children can use the facilities of Sheraton Waikiki next door, including the playground and pool. They also have a nursery.

Another great option is the Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach. This large hotel is located close to the beach, and it has an infinity pool with awesome views. There are different restaurants to choose from on site. Don’t forget to request a room with an ocean view!

If you are on a tighter budget, the Twin Fin Hotel located on Kalakaua Avenue is also a good option. It’s close to the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki city centre, so there are plenty of restaurants in the area. The rooms are not as spacious, but it’s still a nice place to relax.

Transport from Honolulu International Airport

It’s a good idea to have your transportation from the airport to your hotel organised, as it will save time for you to continue your trip and enjoy your Hawaii stopover.

Some hotels in Waikiki organise shared shuttle rides to and from the airport. From about $18 USD per person, you can make a reservation. This is a reliable option as you won’t have to stand in a queue to get tickets for other buses.

There are taxis available at the airport that will take you to your hotel in Honolulu within 20-30 minutes. The fare can vary from $45 USD to $55 USD, a tip of 15-20% will be expected. You can also book a private transfer from the airport.
